Hands-on Workshops at Wounds Canada Fall Conference Niagara Falls

Hands-on workshops are small group settings where attendees will have a chance to interact closely with faculty and materials related to each workshops subject matter. These workshops will take place on Thursday, October 3rd from 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m at the Hilton Fallsview Hotel.

Please note - you must be registered to attend the Wounds Canada Fall Conference in Niagara Falls in order to register for a hands-on workshop.

The two hands-on workshops being held this year are:

Ostomy Care 101

Come and join your colleagues in learning the latest techniques for establishing a secure ostomy seal for your patient! Attendees of this interactive ostomy conference event will receive an overview of the pathophysiology specific to the different types of ostomies. Additionally, they will have a hands-on opportunity to work with various pouching systems and accessory products. The event will include actual video footage of people with an ostomy and optimum care practices.


Session objectives
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the various types of ostomies including pathophysiology
2. Demonstrate how to use one-piece and two-piece pouching systems and accessory products
3. Discuss stomal and peristomal complications
4. Present management strategies to maintain healthy peristomal skin

Biopsy, Suturing and Bedside Sharp Debridement

In this session, delegates will learn when and why performance of biopsy, suturing and bedside sharp debridement skills are indicated or contraindicated and will explore the risks associated with these procedures and alternative treatment options. Speakers will describe the assessment components that should be performed prior to performing these skills and will demonstrate these skills on a pig’s foot. Participants will learn how to evaluate the effectiveness of these procedures and will discuss referral sources for patients who require more complex assessment and/or treatment. Finally, speakers will discuss ways to seek out mentorship opportunities within various workplaces so that participants can further practice their skills.

Session objectives
Regarding the skills of biopsy, suturing and bedside sharp debridement, at the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss when and why performance of the skills may be indicated (and not indicated), alternatives, the risks associated with the procedures and the resources required to perform the skills
2. State the assessment components required prior to performing the skills
3. Demonstrate the skills on a pig’s foot
4. State methods to evaluate the effectiveness/success of the performance of the skills
5. Discuss referral sources for patient’s requiring more complex assessment and/or treatment
6. Describe how they will seek out additional mentorship opportunities within their workplaces to further practice their skills
