As the leading wound care organization in Canada, Wounds Canada’s mandate is to provide you with evidence-informed information and tools to help you help your patients. Our quarterly newsletter shares the latest from our team of national and international experts—please pass it on to a colleague if you think they could benefit from learning more about wound prevention and management. 
 
Wound Sleuth

 A 56-year-old male presented to the clinic with a wound to the medial aspect of the right hallux, which is draining serosanguineous fluid. He mentions that he was camping, and at the end of the week his big toe became red and swollen. Within 24 hours it had opened and started draining. He went to the local ER where the wound was cultured, X-rays were taken and the patient was placed on IV cefazolin. He has insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and a history of hypertension (HTN), dyslipidemia, arrhythmia and hypothyroidism.

At Wounds Canada, we believe centring the voice of the patient is crucial to enacting change in the health-care system and delivering the best possible wound care. That's why we're thrilled to announce the launch of the “Patients’ Voices, Stories and Journeys” project, which aligns with the research program and previous work related to patients’ empowerment and engagement in everyday self-management of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) of Idevania Costa (principal investigator).

Limb Preservation Symposium - May 6, 2022 (Virtual)

This one-day learning event on limb preservation is a joint venture between Wounds Canada and the Canadian Podiatric Medical Association. The program, chaired by Dr. Ahmed Kayssi, will provide national and international perspectives on the advances in managing diabetic foot-related complications.


Patient Journey Conference - June 9-10, 2022 (Virtual)

This unique two-day learning, outreach and knowledge exchange event is funded through a grant from SSHRC, led by Drs. Ide Costa, Catherine Phillips and Michelle Spadoni of Lakehead University, and Dr. Pilar Plazas of Queen's University, in collaboration with Wounds Canada. The purpose of this conference is to bring together citizens impacted by complex wounds, researchers, health and social service providers, educators, community leaders and policy makers.


National Conference - October 14–16, 2022 (Hybrid)

This is the largest wound‑related event in Canada, bringing together health-care providers, educators and key opinion leaders in both a virtual space and on-site gathering in Toronto. The conference consists of:

  • Friday, October 14 - English single stream
  • Saturday, October - 15 English and French double stream
  • Sunday, October 16 - English single stream


Pressure Injury Symposium - November 17, 2022 (Virtual)

Join us for this one-day event, which coincides with the recognition of World Wide Pressure Injury Day, with co-chairs Dr. Alan Rogers and Stephanie Chadwick. This conference examines the risks and causes along with the multi-disciplinary comprehensive management of pressure injuries by dietitians, nurses, surgeons, physicians and physiatrists to develop strategies, overcome barriers and improve patient outcomes.
