E-Stim is an evidence-informed\, publicly-funded\, advan ced wound care practice that involves applying low levels of specialized electrical current directly to the wound area to accelerate wound healing pro cesses. This interprofessional\, hands-on clinical skills workshop is designed for Nurses\, Physicia ns\, Chiropodists\, and Physical Therapists with e xperience in wound care\, who are interested in ga ining the knowledge\, skills\, and judgements need ed to use of E-Stim on hard to heal wounds. This h ands-on\, interactive\, clinical workshop will foc us on application techniques and the proper use of equipment and supplies needed to deliver E-Stim d irectly to the wound area. It will give participan ts an opportunity to apply background knowledge an d clinical research evidence so they appreciate wh en\, why and how to use E-Stim to promote wound cl osure. Case studies and other exercises will promo te advanced clinical decision making skills needed to identify individuals who are most likely to be nefit from E-Stim\, and to design a customized E-S tim program that is safe\, effective\, and feasibl e. Demonstrations of other physical modalities (ul trasound\, ultraviolet light\, and LASER) will als o be provided

Pre-requisite
\n This course is designed at an adva nced level for clinicians who have experience trea ting patients with open wounds. Registrants of thi s clinical skills workshop will be contacted by th e lead facilitator Pamela Houghton to receive deta ils about access to a secure online website so the y can complete online modules\, view application v ideos\, and read relevant resources in advance of the workshop.

These online modules pro vide essential background information that explain s: 1) What E-Stim is\, 2) How E-Stim works to stim ulate healing processes\, and 3) Highlights clinic al research evidence used to guide E-Stim treatmen ts of common wound etiologies including pressure i njuries\, venous/arterial leg ulcers\, and diabeti c foot wounds. You are strongly encouraged to comp lete these 6 modules (2.5 hours of pre-recorded pr esentations) before attending the skills lab so th at background knowledge about E-Stim can be applie d to the clinical skills and judgements reviewed a nd discussed in the workshop.

1. Apply backgrou nd knowledge about the mechanisms of action and cl inical research evidence for different E-Stim trea tment parameters and protocols.
\n 2. Practic e applying E-Stim to wound models using different electrodes (types and placement) and associated el ectrical stimulus parameters.
\n 3. Experienc e various equipment and supplies that are availabl e in Canada to deliver E-Stim and other physical m odalities (ultrasound (US)\, ultraviolet light (UV C)\, and LASER) directly to the wound.
\n 4.S elect appropriate clients for E-Stim treatment bas ed on the knowledge and understanding of clinical indications and relevant contraindications and pre cautions.
\n 5.Design a customized E-Stim tre atment plan that will be safe and effective and ca n be easily incorporated into an individual’s curr ent wound care program.
\n 6.Apply a recommen ded treatment approach recommended by a national c onsensus panel for physical modalities (E-Stim\, U VC\, US\, LASER) which includes knowing what to ex pect\, what early signs and symptoms to watch for\ , and how to modify treatments based on a person’s response.
