Hands-on Workshops at Wounds Canada Spring Conference: Calgary, Alberta

Hands-on workshops are small group settings where attendees will have a chance to interact closely with faculty and materials related to each workshop subject matter. These workshops will take place on Friday, April 3rd from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Best Western Premier Calgary Plaza Hotel & Conference Centre.

*Please note - you must be registered to attend the 2020 Wounds Canada Spring Conference in Calgary, AB in order to register for a hands-on workshop.

The two hands-on workshops being held are:

E-Stim 101
Come and join your colleagues in learning the latest techniques for applying electrical stimulation (e-stim) therapy for wound healing. This session will highlight how e-stim works to promote wound closure and will identify appropriate candidates for this advanced therapy. Faculty will review the indications, contraindications, and precautions for e-stim with attendees, and will demonstrate how to apply e-stim to a simulated wound using both monopolar and bipolar techniques. Attendees will then apply the therapy to a simulated wound themselves.

Session objectives
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the physiologic effects of electrical stimulation on wound healing
  • Describe appropriate candidates for wound healing with electrical stimulation
  • State the contraindications and precautions of electrical stimulation for wound healing
  • Demonstrate monopolar and bipolar application of electrical stimulation therapy to a simulated wound

Pressure Injury Prevention 101
Ever wonder what the differences are between the various  types of therapeutic pressure redistribution surfaces on the market? Well, this is your opportunity to learn from the experts! Join our faculty as they explore the risk and causative factors associated with pressure injuries and demystify the recent changes to the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel’s pressure injury stages.  Learn how to use the Braden Scale for Predicting Pressure Sore Risk and how to translate the results of using this tool into appropriate interventions to prevent and treat pressure injuries, inclusive of the selection and proper use of pressure redistribution surfaces.

Session objectives
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and describe risk and causative factors that may contribute to the development of a pressure injury or delay closure of a pressure injury
  • Demonstrate how to use a validated pressure injury risk assessment tool to identify patients at risk for pressure injury
  • Define and describe the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel’s pressure injury stages
  • Demonstrate positioning and repositioning strategies to mitigate pressure injury risk and causative factors (inclusive of the selection and use of pressure redistribution devices)

Attendees may sign up to attend one of these workshops as they occur simultaneously.
