About this program:

This educational event will further the student’s knowledge as it pertains to preventative skin care. Together the faculty and students will explore topics such as: how to identify persons at risk for skin breakdown, interventions to prevent skin breakdown in at-risk populations and what to do should they encounter skin breakdown. Students will gain insight on what to assess, when to inform and how to carry out basic care for common skin conditions including: pressure injuries, circulatory issues, trauma, moisture-related skin damage, thermal injuries and skin and nail fungus.

Objectives:

At the end of this educational event, students will be able to:

  • Identify factors that put persons at risk for skin damage
  • Describe common skin care measures to prevent skin injury
  • Discuss what common skin damage such as pressure injuries, skin tears and leg ulcers look like, are caused by and where they are most often located
  • Identify signs of new or worsening skin damage such as pressure, incontinence-associated dermatitis, foot fungus and yeast in skin folds
  • Discuss strategies to manage skin damage such as pressure injuries, skin tears, incontinence associated dermatitis, for example, as an unregulated care provider
  • Explore strategies to reinforce healthy habits of those cared for
