Wounds Canada is delighted to support the Ontario Long-Term Care (LTC) sector in building capacity in skin health and wound care among both regulated and unregulated healthcare providers, through partnerships with Long-Term Care Homes.

The Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care funding will support 150 regulated staff (RN, RPN, NP, MD, PT, OT, Chiropodist, RD) in completing the Accredited Wound Care Champion Program (AWCCP) and 200 unregulated staff in completing the Skin Health Program (SHP).

This MLTC funding will also be available to Long-Term Care Home Partners for staff replacement and professional development support, ensuring successful completion of the program for enrolled staff.

Wounds Canada will enter into agreements with LTC Home Partners to support enrolled staff and be part of a comprehensive program impact and outcome evaluation process.

About the Accredited Wound Care Champion Program
Designed to empower frontline regulated health-care clinicians (RN, RPN, NP, MD, PT, OT, Chiropodist, RD), the AWCCP equips participants with the essential knowledge and skills needed to identify individuals at risk for wounds and to implement effective preventative and treatment strategies. This multifaceted program, which requires an average of 80 hours to complete, not only prepares clinicians to become proficient in wound prevention and care but also positions them to be leaders of change within the health care community.

  • 12 synchronous webinars
  • discussion forum with fellow learners and faculty
  • RNAO Best Practice Champion e-Learn (comprised of three online modules)

  • 4 robust assignments/evaluations, including 2 case-based assignments, a knowledge quiz and a reflective practice portfolio submission

The SHP for Personal Care Providers is an opportunity for personal care providers to enhance their knowledge in skin health and the prevention of common forms of skin damage, including skin tears, pressure injuries, moisture-associated skin damage, diabetic foot ulcers, leg ulcers and swelling, and thermal skin injuries.

This program encourages an interprofessional, collaborative and person-centred approach to care and focuses on early risk identification and prevention, which are key to ensuring the best possible outcomes for people at risk. The program is fully online and can be completed in 12-15 hours. Participants will be required to complete the program in 10 weeks and must be prepared to dedicate 2 hours per week to program activities.
