For over 30 years, Wounds Canada has been at the forefront of advancing the cause of excellence in skin health, wound prevention and wound care in Canada. We are committed to driving change that will equitably benefit the health of Canadians in all parts of the country.

Our overall goal hierarchy is to:

1. Prevent all preventable wounds.
2. Prevent all existing wounds from becoming complex and/or chronic.
3. Move all chronic wounds onto a healing trajectory.
4. Improve and maintain a good quality of life for patients with unhealable wounds.

As an organization we do this by:

  • Promoting a risk-based “prevention first” philosophy
  • Advocating to governments across Canada to ensure they
    • make wound prevention and care a priority when allocating resources
    • increase financial support for wound-related research
    • support accredited skin and wound education for health-care providers
    • implement Wounds Canada’s best practice recommendations into health decision making
    • use Wounds Canada’s care pathways when designing systems relating to skin health and wound care
  • Promoting a Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities in Wound Prevention and Care to support patients who are living with or at risk for a wound
  • Providing a platform for patients to share their wound-healing journeys through the Our Voices, Our Stories project
  • Making resources available to health decision makers to support excellence in skin health and wound care
  • Providing high-quality, accredited interprofessional health-provider skin- and wound-related education
  • Creating awareness of the challenges that wound patients face as they navigate Canada’s health-care systems and providing solutions to help overcome the challenges
  • Supporting a national community of wound carers, patients, families and health decision makers through events and resources
