Program Description

The Best Practice Approach to Wound Debridement and Minor Surgical Procedures is designed to equip learners with the foundational skills and knowledge necessary to excel in wound debridement and minor surgical procedures. Through comprehensive training, learners will develop competency as advanced beginners in wound debridement and minor surgical procedures.

This program is delivered through an eight-hour, in-person Skills Lab. The program provides learners with an overview of conservative sharp wound debridement and outlines indications and contraindications for its use as an intervention in skin health and wound management, as well as wound–care related minor surgical procedures.

Note: The hands-on skills of debridement and minor surgical procedures will require practice experience under the guidance of a preceptor/mentor before independent practice of the skills in a clinical setting.

During the skills lab, participants:

  • Gain knowledge about key factors to consider when identifying debriding as an appropriate intervention such as safety, documentation, infection and pain control, equipment required, dressings, waste management, and
  • Practise debridement techniques in a simulated situation with the guidance of expert faculty.
  • Gain knowledge about key factors to consider when carrying out minor surgical procedures such as safety, documentation, infection and pain control, equipment required, dressings, and waste management, and
  • Practise minor surgical procedures in a simulated situation with the guidance of expert faculty.
